It seems Netflix won’t split its DVD and video streaming services after all.
Last month, CEO Reed Hastings announced that Netflix would push the company’s DVD rental service to a new website called Qwikster while Netflix would be reserved for streaming only. Under the new plan, customers who wished to stream movies and watch DVDs would have to maintain two separate accounts and pay two separate charges, a proposal that infuriated many Netflix customers.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced last night that the popular video rental service will now split into two separate companies, one for online video streaming and one for DVD by mail. The announcement comes two months after Netflix said it would begin charging separately for the two services and raise existing prices by 60%, a move that infuriated many customers.
“I messed up. I owe everyone an explanation,” Hastings said on The Netflix Blog Sunday night. “We realized that streaming and DVD by mail are really becoming two different businesses, with very different cost structures, that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently.”

Reading Rainbow, the popular children’s television show that encouraged kids to read books, was shut down in 2006, much to pretty much everyone’s dismay. It had aired for over 20 years on PBS, but the network’s financial troubles were the nail in the Rainbow’s coffin. Now, fans of the show will be delighted to hear that it’s coming back – although, not on television.
Reading Rainbow will make its return to the media world via iPad app.

September is National Coupon Month, a perfect time for TLC to debut the second season of Extreme Couponing. And though extreme couponers are not particularly popular with cashiers or other shoppers (thanks to the long lines and hassle they bring), there’s one breed of couponer that is particularly loathed: the shelf clearer.

It’s a pretty big blow to Netflix – users will soon lose access to new movies from two of Hollywood’s biggest studios, Disney Studios and Sony Pictures. In a deal that broke down yesterday, Starz Entertainment said that it will end a distribution deal with Netflix that provided the streaming service with movies from those studios. That news sent Netflix stock plunging 9% overnight.
