10 States with the Most Identity Theft

The Federal Trade Commission's motto for identity theft is "Deter, Detect, Defend". While everyone is at risk, residents of some states are more susceptible. While you may predict that the states with the largest populations have the most identity theft complaints, there are several smaller states that round out the Top 10.

  1. Florida
  2. Arizona
  3. Texas
  4. California
  5. Nevada
  6. New Mexico
  7. Georgia
  8. New York
  9. Colorado
  10. Illinois

The types of identity theft reported in each state vary, with Florida's most common complaint related to government documents or benefits fraud, and Arizona reporting the most employment-related fraud. California and Nevada are kings of the most credit card fraud.

Does age have anything to do with becoming an identity theft victim? Since Florida and Arizona top the list, and they share an abundance of retirement communities, many think the elderly population is targeted most. While this may be true, the FTC reports that nearly half of all complaints come from 20 to 39 year olds, while only 13% are from victims age 60 and over.
