Adult Websites to Have .XXX Domain

Forget .com web addresses. Adult services will soon have a more accurate way to list their websites: .xxx.

On Friday, The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names (ICANN) finally approved .xxx domain names, The Washington Post reports. The approval comes after years of deliberation by ICANN.

A benefit to ICANN's controversial decision? ICM Registry, the company that will oversee .xxx, says it will monitor sites on the explicit domain to prevent spam, viruses, child pornography, and other illegal behavior.

“At the moment, the consumer has no way of knowing who is operating to good standards or has viruses,” Stuart Lawley, ICM Registry’s chairman and chief executive, said in an interview. “This new domain allows webmasters to associate with best business practices.”

However, not everyone is a fan of the decision, including the creators of adult entertainment websites. Pornographers fear sites on the .xxx domain will be affected by government censorship and that porn websites will be forced to spend thousands of dollars on .xxx domains to protect their brands from the much-loathed cyber squatters.

“This is putting a red target on us,” said Diane Duke, executive director of the Free Speech Coalition. “People who are pedophiles and child pornographers are not part of the adult-entertainment system. We have a code of ethics. We do a great job of creating an adults-only space.”

What do you think of the .xxx decision?
