MediaPost Appy Awards

On Monday, MediaPost announced the winners of the first ever Appy Awards and Flipboard, a social media magazine app, won Best in Show. Urbanspoon, Photobucket, Flixster, and 22 other innovative apps were also honored at MediaPost’s San Franciso awards ceremony.

Designed to recognize outstanding mobile, social, or web-based applications, the Appy Awards honors apps in over 20 categories including books, cooking, and entertainment. Want to know which apps took home the prize? Here are a few 2011 Appy Awards winners.

Best in Show - Flipboard

Flipboard is a fun and easy way for users to view news, photos, and updates from a variety of social media websites. Displayed in a magazine layout, the content on Flipboard is simple to scan and users can easily share articles and photos, comment on posts, and like or favorite anything from websites like Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and Google Reader.

In addition to winning the Appy Awards’ Best in Show, Flipboard was also named Apple's iPad App of the Year and one of TIME's top 50 innovations of 2010.

Books - Teddy's Day

Using such elements as animated characters that respond to taps and tickles and color drawing tablets, the Teddy’s Day app creates a fun and interactive storybook experience for children of all ages.

Communication - TigerText

For those with privacy (or philandering) in mind, TigerText is an app that allows users to send and receive text messages that will be deleted once read.

Cooking - Your Kitchen Inspiration

Your Kitchen Inspiration contains thousands of member-tested recipes searchable by dish type, ingredients, cuisine, cooking time, prep method, and more.

Education - Rock Prodigy

Described as a mix of Guitar Hero and a guitar teacher, Rock Prodigy is a fast, fun way for users to learn how to play the guitar.

Entertainment - Movies by Flixster

With Flixster, users can watch movie trailers, find showtimes, get critic reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, and share movie ratings with friends.

Finance - Chase GiftShelf

Chase GiftShelf is a convenient way to search for gifts, purchase gift cards, or get advice. The app is currently only available to Chase customers.

Games - Rhythm Racer 2

Combining elements of F-Zero and Guitar Hero, Rhythm Racer 2 is a 3D racing experience set to music.

Healthcare & Fitness - Runmeter

Runmeter is app that turns iPhone into a GPS stopwatch.

iPad Publishing - The Knot Wedding Magazine

Designed for Bride-to-bes, The Knot Wedding Magazine is an extensive wedding plan app featuring tips, dress photos, advice, and more.
