Playboy to Release iPad App

While a Starbucks app has made it easier for coffee lovers to purchase their favorite java, Playboy’s iPad application will be a different kind of stimulating.

On Tuesday, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, he of the fiancé 60 years his junior, took to Twitter to announce Playboy’s iPad debut.

“Big news! Playboy--both old & new--will be available on iPad beginning in March,” Hefner tweeted.

After Hef assured fans that the iPad app would not be censored, many wondered if the notoriously prude Apple had dropped its policy of keeping explicit images off its products. That, however, was not the case.

According to a report in CNET, Playboy will release an uncensored, web-based subscription that customers can access from devices like the iPad, but it will not be available in Apple’s iTunes App Store. Playboy will also release an official iPad app that is nudity free. There is already a similar nudie free app for the iPhone.

Apple has repeatedly barred sexual applications from its app store, and CEO Steve Jobs has derided the company’s competition for doing otherwise.

"You know, there's a porn store for Android,” he said. “You can download porn, your kids can download porn. That's a place we don't want to go, so we're not going to go there."

So far, Playboy has not revealed how much the upcoming web-based subscription will cost or when in March the technology will be available.
