Popular Blogging Site Tumblr Down for 19+ Hours

It may not seem like that long, but for the blogging website Tumblr, 19 hours of an outage feels like forever. Users of the website have scrambled to Twitter and Facebook to air their frustrations, as the site currently says that it will be back “shortly.”

The error message reads, “We’re working quickly to recover from an issue in one of our database clusters. We’re incredibly sorry for the inconvenience.”

According to Tumblr founder David Karp, the issue comes from scheduled maintenance that “went haywire.”  The site is host to millions of users, and while other websites like Twitter have had database troubles (like with the World Cup earlier this year), it’s pretty uncommon for an outage to last as long as Tumblr’s has.

But, not to worry: Karp says, “Rebuilding the entire cluster has been a painfully slow and manual process, but we’re almost through.”

Like many others did to air their grievances with the outage, Tumblr took to Twitter to announce the status of the repairs.  Their Tweet on Twitter is the same as the error message on the Tumblr homepage.

Has this outage affected you? I keep a cooking blog on Tumblr, but thankfully for them, I’m a complete slacker when it comes to updating it, so I haven’t really felt the sting of the outage.
