Samsung Says iPad Mini to Arrive by End of the Year

Demand for the iPad 3 has been “off the charts,” but Apple fanboys and girls may soon have a new product to drool over – an iPad mini. An anonymous Samsung official told the Korea Times that the Cupertino-based company will release a smaller version of the iPad by the end of the year.

The device will reportedly have a 7.85-inch screen which will allow it to compete with the popular Amazon Kindle Fire. Though Steve Jobs once dismissed the idea of a 7-inch iPad, saying it would be too small to function as a touch screen tablet, the success of the Kindle Fire seems to have changed Apple’s mind. The current iPads have 10-inch screens.

Meanwhile, pre-orders for the new iPad have been so high that Apple has changed the official shipping date from March 16 to March 19.

"Customer response to the new iPad has been off the charts and the quantity available for pre-order has been purchased," Apple said in a statement. "Customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date."

Customers can still get an iPad 3 on March 16 (maybe) by braving the lines at one of Apple’s retail stores or resellers.

Would you buy an iPad mini or do you prefer Apple’s current models?
