Solar Power Patent Approved for Apple

People who use their iPhones, iPods, and iPads profusely know the batteries can drain pretty quick. However, with Apple's recently granted patent, solar powered mobile devices may be available in a few years.

Solar Powered iPad?

While there are already solar powered chargers on the market, this is the first patent to be awarded to a company for solar powered portable devices. It calls for a "voltage regulator" and "smart controller" to be charged in spurts, in varying voltage and current. The devices will be able to know when it's more efficient to use the solar cells, or when it makes more sense to use the battery.

Apple was granted 563 patents in 2010, making it one of the top 50 companies filing patents that year. IBM was number one, with 5,896.
