Starbucks Adds Android App To Mobile Payment Program

Starbucks is rolling out a new mobile app for Android users. The app is designed to help manage the Starbucks Card-on-the-go. Starbucks already has in place a mobile payment program that is used by My Starbucks Rewards customers on other platforms. By adding the Android app the company is expanding their reach to 90 percent of the smartphones currently in use. They will also be expanding the mobile payment capabilities to roughly 1,000 Starbucks Safeway locations throughout the country.

Adam Brotman, vice president, general manager, Digital Ventures at Starbucks Coffee Company said, “Starbucks is committed to providing customers richer experiences – both in our stores and on-the-go. By expanding mobile payment capabilities to Android smartphones and with Safeway now offering mobile payment in its close to 1,000 Starbucks locations, we’re giving customers the opportunity to experience mobile payment in more ways and at more Starbucks locations.”

The app is available for Android phones running 2.1 or above. Starbucks for Android will let users:

  • Check their Starbucks card balance
  • Use the phone to reload their Starbucks Card using any major credit card.
  • Find out how close they are to their next free drink
  • Locate the nearest Starbucks.
Just like the actual plastic card available, the app provides a bar code that is scanned at the register making cash and credit cards a thing of the past.
