US Releases List of Notorious Copyright Offenders

On Monday, the US Trade Representative office released a list of international markets that help to “sustain global piracy and counterfeiting” and Chinese search engine Baidu, Swedish torrent download site Pirate Bay, and Taobao, China's largest retail website, are three of many websites named in the five-page report.

While USTR did not threaten any specific action, the report “urges the responsible authorities to intensify efforts to combat piracy and counterfeiting in these and similar markets.”

Here are a few web-based services that made the list of notorious offenders.

Allofmp3 clones. The report states that “while the Russia-based allofmp3 (formerly the world’s largest server-based pirate music website) was shut down in 2007, nearly identical sites have taken its place.”

Chinese search engine Baidu is the most visited site in China and is among the top ten most visited sites in the world.

Taobao, China’s largest retail website, is one of the top fifteen most visited sites in the world. The USTR report acknowledges Taobao’s efforts to combat copyright infringement, but notes that the website still has a long ways to go to address the availability of infringing goods.

ThePirateBay ranks among the top 100 websites in both global and U.S. traffic.

Canada-based IsoHunt has been the subject of civil litigation in both Canada and the U.S. and recently ranked among the top 300 websites in global traffic.

According to the report, “Bitjunkie is among the largest and most popular aggregators of public and non-public ‘torrents,’ which find and initiate the downloading process for a particular file.”

Kickasstorrents is another popular indexing site.

torrentz.com is a major aggregator of torrents from other BitTorrent sites.

Russia-based Rutracker is one of the nation’s 15 most visited sites.

Ukraine-hosted Demonoid also receives a lot of international traffic.

According to the report, Publicbt is one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers with over 30 million users worldwide.

Openbittorrent ranks among the most widely used BitTorrent trackers in the world.

Bulgarian-based zamunda is currently the target of a noteworthy criminal prosecution.
