Waste Time in Margaritaville Online

Forget farming virtual crops. Jimmy Buffet hopes to lure online gamers into virtual bartending with Margaritaville Online, a new game that gives players the chance to create their own version of Jimmy Buffet’s tropical paradise complete with boats, booze, and babes.

"You can build a boat and you can build a bar. You gotta evade the pirates. You can have adventures," Buffett said. "You can go to Margaritaville."

Due later this year on Facebook and the Apple iPad, Margaritaville will be a free online social game in which players can earn virtual currency to build and decorate their own paradise based on the popular song. Buffet also hopes to include a feature that will allow players to trade virtual goods for merchandise at real Margaritaville restaurants.

"If you buy virtual cheeseburgers and margaritas to send to friends, that should earn you a real burger or beer at a restaurant,” he said.

Characters and destinations from Jimmy Buffet’s songs will also make an appearance in the new game, which the singer is creating with developer THQ. There will be a Captain Tony’s Boats and Planes outpost as well as a Joe Merchant’s trading post, allusions to Buffet’s song "Last Mango in Paris" and his book Where is Joe Merchant?

"The Margaritaville laidback state of mind is inherently social, and THQ has captured the spirit of that lifestyle in this game," said Buffett. "With Margaritaville Online, fans across the globe can party together any time and any place."

What do you think gamers? Could Margaritaville one day be as popular as Farmville?
