Apple Delays iPad 2 Release to Japan Following Earthquake, Tsunami

Apple’s iPad 2 launched last Friday in the U.S. International release was expected to follow shortly thereafter, but Apple has confirmed that it will delay the release of the iPad 2 in Japan, following the disastrous earthquake and tsunami.

“We are delaying the launch of the iPad 2 in Japan while the country and our teams focus on recovering from the recent disaster. Our hearts go out to the people of Japan, including our employees and their families, who have been impacted by this terrible tragedy,” the company said in a statement.

Apple is collecting donations for the Red Cross on its iTunes site. The iPad 2 was set to roll out in Japan on March 25, but no word has been given on when the new release date will be.

Apple is not the only company to show its support to victims of the disaster – movie studios Disney and Warner Bros. have announced they will make donations, both standalone and from profits of DVD sales. Warner Bros. also pulled the release of Hereafter from Japan, saying that the film’s themes are not appropriate at this time in the country.
