Apple Camera Connection Kit Provides USB Access to iPad

If there is one thing that a lot of people probably miss when they use their iPads, it’s USB connectivity. Thankfully, Apple’s Camera Connection Kit for the iPad changes that – though it’s meant for connecting digital cameras, the USB connector allows for using other USB devices with your iPad, making it a much more useful product.

The connection kit also comes with an SD card adapter, so you can plug that into your iPad and stick your camera’s SD memory card directly into the iPad. Finally, a way to get to your pictures on the iPad without the inconvenient  upload-to-computer, email-to-iPad process.

Alternatively, if you use an iPhone (which I’m sure a lot of iPad users do), the USB connectivity adapter allows you to plug your iPhone into the device and pull pictures off of your iPhone.

Reviews for the item on apple.com also suggest that in addition to cameras and iPhones, the USB connector allows other USB devices to be plugged in, such as USB keyboards. I have to wonder if a USB external hard drive would work on the adapter – think of how convenient that would be!

The camera connection kit supports standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW, as well as SD and HD video formats, including H.264 and MPEG-4. It retails for $29.00 on http://store.apple.com/, and is also available at some electronics stores.
