Teenager in China Sells His Kidney for an iPad 2

Chinese teen sells kidney for ipad 2

A 17-year-old in China wanted an iPad 2 but couldn’t afford it. The logical thing to do in a scenario like this one would be to save up the money needed – but  a boy named Zheng decided instead to sell a kidney for the tech toy.

“I wanted to buy an iPad 2 but could not afford it. A broker contacted me on the Internet and said he could help me sell one kidney for 20,000 yuan.”

20,000 yuan is about $3,000, so he did get more than he needed for the iPad, but his health has taken a turn for the worse. His mother had no idea her son had sold a kidney, and has tried to get in contact with the kidney broker – and she’s been unsurprisingly unsuccessful.

On April 28, Zheng went to Chenzhou City  for the kidney removal surgery. When he returned home, his mother found out immediately and reported the incident to the police, who said they could not locate the broker – his cell phone was always powered off.

The story gets sadder and creepier – the hospital that the operation took place at is now saying that they had no idea the surgery happened and that they weren’t even qualified to carry out the procedure – the operation had been contracted to a Fujian businessman.

The case is reportedly still under investigation.
