iPhone Apps for The Skier

Ah, yes it is ski season again.  Whether you are a downhill enthusiast or you would rather go cross country these apps for your iPhone will keep you safe and informed on the trails.

First up is the North Face Snow Report.  It includes quick weather updates for most resorts, trail maps and details such as lift running times and snow totals.

Every skier needs a person GPS. Motion GPS excels. It can provide information on where you have been, excellent for when you have gone off the trail and need to find a way back.  If you keep the app running all day you will also have readouts of how far you’ve skied, your top speed and the elevation lost or gained.  You can also pull it out before a run down the mountain to get a topological view of the terrain that lies before you.

The iTrailmap 3D is a fun app but it has limited utility.  The intent is to provide you with a 3D view of the trails while you are on the slopes.

If for some reason you are not happy with the North Face Snow Report you can switch to OnTheSnow. It is similar but lacks a bit of polish.

Any of these apps would be fun to have while enjoying the slopes.
