Sony’s Crackle App Offers Free Movies, Television Shows

While video streaming services like Hulu Plus, Netflix, and HBO Go are nice, some people just aren’t willing to pay for a subscription. With that in mind Sony created Crackle, a FREE app that allows users to stream movies and television shows to their iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

So just what does Crackle offer in terms of content? TV highlights include Seinfeld, Married With Children, Samurai X, and Starsky and Hutch. The Da Vinci Code, Snatch, Ghostbusters, and A Few Good Men are among Crackle’s better movie offerings.  All in all, Crackle currently offers over 200 titles from Sony-owned production companies like Sony Pictures Classics, Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems, and more.

There are a few downsides, of course. Most of the television series listed on Crackle are actually minisodes, not full episodes, and a lot of the movies are batches of clips rather than full-length titles. Some of the flicks are also less than thrilling. Joe Dirt, Puff, Puff, Pass anyone? Not to mention, viewers will have to deal with intermittent ads.

Nevertheless, the app is free so I’m willing to bet more than a few people will overlook these minor disappointments. Be sure to check out the fun movie collections like the Stoner Shows collection, Awesome 80’s, So Bad It’s Good, and Godzilla.
